On what was a relatively flat lighting day with an abundance of low cloud around the Tongariro Crossing in New Zealand, the Soda Stream Falls benefited from a brief clear patch where the light shone through the valley to give some contrast.
After hiking through continuous cloud along the Tongariro Crossing with very low visibility, I was rewarded with one clear patch to get a glimpse of Mt Ngauruhoe. This is one of the active volcanoes in the Tongariro National Park. I particularly love the bareness and harshness of the landscape and I see myself returning there often in the future.
Given enough time water can cut away even the hardest rock. The torrent of water through Mahuia Rapids in the Tongariro National Park is a sight to behold as it has cut a gorge deep into the volcanic rock.
